Dental Prevention - Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is the best solution for the prevention of many diseases and problems related to the oral cavity. Incorrect and inadequate hygiene in combination with daily nutrition leads to the formation of plaque. A lot of research has revealed the link between plaque and gum infection, plaque being the main and primary cause of gum infection. The inflammation may remain localized only in the gum area, but frequently this turns into a severe inflammation called periodontitis.

When the patient does not perform proper oral hygiene, caries can form, inflame the gums or in extreme cases lead to the loss of dental elements.

Through proper oral hygiene we keep bacteria away and guarantee better health for our teeth and mouth.

What tools should be used for proper oral hygiene?

Daily preventive hygiene, which includes brushing, flossing, and mouthwash, helps keep dental problems under control before they get worse.

-The toothbrush is the most important tool for the prevention of tooth decay and gum disease, because it is able to remove food residues and bacterial plaque. Toothbrushes with a smaller head, with soft soft bristles or medium hard bristles are recommended. The toothbrush needs to be changed every 3 months. rounded.

The brushing technique changes depending on whether it is the teeth present in the upper or lower arch. For the teeth present in the upper upper arch the action must take place from the top downwards, while for those present in the lower arch from the bottom upwards. This allows to reach the proximal spaces without damaging the gums. The toothbrush should be replaced every 3 months.

Toothpastes, toothpastes should always be used when brushing, the amount used is equal to the size of a pea.

-The dental floss is the second fundamental tool for dental hygiene. Dental floss is used after brushing the teeth, it cleans the interdental spaces that cannot be cleaned with a traditional toothbrush. Its use must be a habit, to be done every evening.

-The mouthwash is not a tool that can replace neither the toothbrush nor the dental floss, but it is a tool that is used to complete oral hygiene. It carries out an important protective action, as it prevents the plaque from re-forming and at the same time leaves the mouth with a feeling of freshness.

Maintenance of oral hygiene after implant insertion

Careful and precise oral hygiene is a priority since the accumulations of plaque form the tartar which leads to the withdrawal of the gums and the bone in which the implant was inserted and all this leads to the exposure of the implant and in some cases even up to the loss of the implant.

Professional Oral Hygiene

However, home oral hygiene is not enough to completely eliminate bacterial plaque and tartar, so it is necessary to periodically plan a visit to the professional, at least once a year but even better if done once every 6 months, who will carry out the so-called professional oral hygiene.  By professional we mean a dentist, dentist or dental hygienist who, through the use of special tools, is able to deeply remove plaque and tartar that accumulate despite proper oral hygiene at home. Furthermore, during the visit it will be possible to carry out a thorough check, identifying potential problems, which if treated in time will avoid any problems related to the patient's oral cavity.
